Visitors with a keen interest in wildlife and the environment have a choice of several national parks and options to go trekking or climb mountains. With Putao, a town in the far north as the starting point one could climb Mt. Hkakabo Razi, the highest in South East Asia at nearly 6,000 m, a peak that was first and last successfully reached in 1996. In this region is the village that lies most northerly in South East Asia as well, the Dahong Dam Village. In this region are villages where races such as Rawang, Lisu, Daru and Nung live.

Another mountain in the area is the Phungan Razi at over 3,000 m. The trek to the base of the mountain goes through tribal villages and virgin forests of the Nam Lang River Valley. Rafting is also available on the Nam Lang River.

In this area you can see rare animals such as Red Panda, black bears, Takin, a deer so small that it could be wrapped in a leaf called the Leaf Deer as well as wild orchids, nearly two hundred bird species, and many more of butterflies.

In the west there is also Mt Victoria, 3053m high which is inside the Natma Taung National Park.

Bird watching is best at the Natma Taung National Park, Alaungdaw Katthapa National Park, Indawgyi Wetland Wildlife, Phungan Razi Wildlife Sanctuary, Htamanthi Wildlife Sanctuary and the Moeyungyi Bird Sanctuary near Yangon.

In the Hukaung Valley Tiger Reserve and Hkakabo Razi National Park you might be lucky enough to come face to face with these big cats.

In the far south there are one thousand islands of the Myeik Archipelago which include Lumpi Island Marine National Park, which the colonial writer Maurice Collis described as paradise on earth.
