Transportation
Transportation in Myanmar was not as perfect as other developed destinations. Myanmar's roadways received the government's attention in the 90's, but not many improvements have been made. Approximately 12 percent of the roads are paved with an overwhelming majority being made of gravel (about 2/3). The remaining roads are not easily accessible by cars, but by jeeps or ox carts. But, nowadays, it is a lot better than before and Air transportation is more efficient and convenient for short domestic flights. If you have plenty of time enjoy sightseeing along the way, you should try travelling by train. Inter-state buses are cheaper than train.
There are 3,200 kilometres of rail track, but not connected with Intra-ASEAN railways network but with major cities within the country.
The major mode of transportation for passengers or for carrying cargo is the use of the inland waterways. There are about 12,870 kilometres of rivers and canals with 3,200 kilometres are navigable for large commercial boats. Considering the fact that most of the major cities in Myanmar are near the inland water ways.
Myanmar Airways is owned by the government and has International service to few countries and cities. There are other International airlines sich as Air Mandalay, Air Bagan, Bangkok Airways, Air Asia, and so on providing flights directly to Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan.
ENTERING THE COUNTRY
Arriving by air is the most convenient and recommended way and have prior visa is required but online application with visa upon arrival is possible and your travel agent or tour operator could arrnge for you without any hassles. Arriving by land via border checkpoints is possible. Currently, there are 4 border checkpoints, from Rule (China) to Mud-se; from Mae Sai (Thailand) to Tachileik, Mae Sot (Thailand) to Myawadee, Ranong (Thailand) to Kawthoung.
There is no requirement for your transportation in Myanmar to show an onward ticket out of the country to enter Myanmar.
Yangon International Airport (Mingalardon Airport) and Mandalay International Airport are the main International Airports in Myanmar. Yangon has direct air Myanmar transportations links with Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Calcutta, Chiang Mai, Taipei, Kunming, Doha and Dhaka. Mandalay has direct air link with Kunming.
GETTING AROUND
Much of Myanmar is off limits to foreigners or can only be accessed after getting permission or by taking an expensive tour organized by the government's Myanmar Travels & Tours (MTT). But in the places where you are able to go there's surprising freedom to stop and roam where you want. Some isolated towns such as kengtung, Sittwe and Kawthoung require jumps by air or bus to reach.
